If you have visited my blog over the years, you will know how much I enjoy planting things in the garden and watching them grow. My love and appreciation for the things God gives us in our world to enjoy and sustain us greatly increases as the years go by. It brings me much joy and relaxation. You might like to see some of my other gardening posts here, here and here.
<span style="background-color: white; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">This year, I am referring to my garden a Victory Garden because it has brought me a lot of solace and comfort during the uncertain times that the COVID19 virus has brought with it. Gardening is certainly not new to me, but it is just feels more special this year. I have added some new things, such as asparagus plants last summer and even more asparagus plants this year. I've also planted two types of raspberries and am hoping they will do well. I have purchased some blackberry plants but haven't planted them out yet. I've added a new variety of blueberries to the two bushes I already have. It's called Pink Lemonade!
<span style="background-color: white; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">

That's probably because herb plants are generally very easy and low maintenance to grow and tend. A lot of them will even stand up and even thrive in hot, sunny climates. Many of the herb family do not require much in the way of watering!
Who knows but what you might even be inspired to try some herbal gardening for yourself!
Did you happen to know that the cilantro plant is where the coriander seed comes from? I fully admit that I didn't always know that fact but I am certainly glad I learned it.
<span style="background-color: white; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">

Truly, this year is a bumper crop of coriander seeds for me. On what you might could call a lark, I had planted some of the seeds from last year's cilantro plants in one of my raised beds, late in the summer of last year. They went through the winter in a dormant state, as the winter season here was really rainy but we didn't have much of any extreme cold weather period. Frankly, I had pretty much forgotten I had done it! What a surprise when all those beautiful cilantro plants started coming up! In fact, it is the most cilantro I have had in my garden at one time, so it appears there will be lots of coriander seeds.

If you enjoy eating chips and tomato salsa, you have probably tasted cilantro. Cilantro it is a pretty much irreplaceable ingredient in making a good Mexican style tomato salsa. The leaves are what gives the salsa its unique and delicious flavor. It's those bright green leaves you see in the sauce that look a lot like the leaves of parsley, another herb that is generally much milder in flavor.

Cilantro has a savory and decidedly more pungent flavor and aroma than most of the parsley varieties that I have grown over the years. Parsley, though more subtle in flavor, lends character and liveliness to a dish or plate by adding interest with its pretty ruffled leaves and bright green color.
Here is a picture of some beautiful parsley growing in a big pot in my garden:

Some people find it works well to cleanse the palate and freshen the breath. I've tried it and, in my opinion, it does work very well in that way. Cilantro likes the cooler days of early spring when the plant is its fullest and the leaves are a bright green and are best for use in flavoring a dish at that point. Its leaves are not as showy and tender.

It is beginning to get warm in the region where I live, so my cilantro is now in the tall, leggy state and leaves are much more sparse. See how tall and leggy the plants are in these pictures of the cilantro in my garden in its current state:
That's when cilantro begins to produce clusters of somewhat largish, round seeds where the flowers had previously been. These are what is referred to as coriander seeds! Some people refer to the plant, in all its stages as a coriander plant, rather than cilantro plant. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered this.

Green Coriander Seeds Before Turning Brown and Dry

When the seed clusters are left on the wilting plant, the seeds will begin to dry up and turn a golden/brownish color. The following picture is a close up of how some of the seeds on my cilantro plants have begun to turn a red/brown:

In a few weeks, when they have fully turned fully brown, it is at that point when it is time to begin harvesting and collecting the lovely seeds. I usually place the seeds in a small paper bag or large envelope to continue drying for a while longer. After the seeds are completely dry, they can be placed in a glass or plastic jar. I sometimes repurpose a clean jar that once contained purchased herbs or spices. I simply remove the old label and put a new label on the jar to identify what is inside. I save pretty spice and herb jars sometimes, with that purpose in mind.

An added bonus to collecting the seeds is that, like myself, you can plant some of the seeds next season and so as to have a good crop of fresh cilantro and coriander seeds next spring too! The Cilantro plant, that grow from planting the Coriander seeds is one of those gifts that just keeps on giving!

If you don't already know how much fun and satisfaction it is to grow your own herbs and spices, my hope is that you will give it a go. Herbs are some of the easiest and most low maintenance form of gardening there is!

Even if you don't want to grow a full-on herb garden, you can plant a few herbs in pots. Most herbs require minimal watering and very little fertilizer and will tolerate more neglect that most garden plants. Most grow quickly and are, therefore, offer quicker gratification. I've grown herbs for decades and never tire of discovering ones I haven't grown before.

The biggest benefit from using herbs is that they make dishes you prepare so much more flavorful and allow us to cut way back on things like salt and sugar in our food preparation and consumption. They offer health benefits to boot! So, all-in-all, herbs and spices are a win/win proposition!

Hello Dear Friends!

We are facing difficult times in this battle we are waging with the COVID-19 virus. Still, God is working in mighty ways for the good of his people. As I have said before, I believe we can and will come through this time stronger and with more conviction.

My son-in-law Jason Redd is pastor of Corinth Baptist Church in New Ellenton, South Carolina. In an effort to follow CDC guidelines and to continue service to the church and community, Corinth held an online service yesterday, Sunday March 22nd. Jason shared the service on Facebook and Youtube.

Prayer is an important part of my everyday life. My personal relationship with my Heavenly Father and the time I spend communing with Him are precious to me. I know God is always there waiting to hear from us. He wants to hear what we have to say to him. He wants to listen to what is troubling us, even though He already knows before we speak it. He has the answers, all of them. He just wants to hear our prayers.

I find myself in prayer even more often. I pray not only for my family and friends, community and country, but for the entire world and all the people in it. I know that prayer works! My God is mightier than any virus and He will work for our good in all things. He is working through this too.

It would be wonderful if you could find a moment to watch and share if you wish to do so. Here is the link to Jason's sermon. It would be wonderful if you could find a moment to watch and share if you wish to do so.

Thank you for stopping by here and taking a moment to read this post.

May God bless you all and let not your hearts be troubled..

Friends, it has been a long time since I posted on my little blog. In these days when so many of us are feeling troubled, fearful and uncertain there is someone we can always count on to see us through. I feel led to share the following words written by the Apostle Paul and found in the Holy Bible. It is my hope that you will find some comfort through the inspired Words of God the Heavenly Father. Let God be your Comforter, knowing that he is working in ways that only He can do. We are safe in His shadow. He is Almighty and All Powerful and He is working right now for our good! That is my belief and my conviction and I am assured that we will come through these uncertain times victorious and be confident will go forward with certainty in our futures. Blessed be His Holy Word.

In 1997 "Titanic the Movie" came on the scene and was a huge success. The movie was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won 11. I found this article from Wikapedia very interesting, as it delves more into the main characters portrayed in the movie. Some of them were fictional and others were actual people who were sailing or working on the Titanic when it collided with an iceberg in the icy waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. More than 1500 people were said either to have died when the luxury liner sank or froze to death in the cold waters that night of April 15, 1912.

They traveled extensively and were, in fact, transatlantic travelers. Clothing worn on such voyages would have been the very latest in fashionable attire.

The Vanderbilts had actually been booked to sail on the Titanic's maiden voyage. Anxious to get back home, they and their daughter decided to take an earlier sailing on the Olympic, another luxury liner of the Cunard line at that time. They set sail for America on April 10, 2012.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the movie, the Biltmore is currently featuring the greatly anticipated costume collection from Titanic the Movie. The exhibition will continue through May 13, 2018. Check out this exhibition and other upcoming events here on Biltmore's website. Ornate furnishing within the palatial Biltmore House combine with fabulously colorful floral creations and plant displays to add special touches that carry the collection into the realm of spectacular.
Following are several photos of some of the costumes worn by Kate Winslet who played the part of Rose DeWitt Bukater in "Titanic the Movie" from the stunning collection on exhibit at Biltmore House. Note how each of these gorgeous ensembles has been stratigically placed in specific locations and rooms in the house. Each room has obviously been chosen for its particular rich color scheme, ornate furnishings a'nd floral arrangements provides the perfect accents and staging for each select costume.

Hello everyone! I hope you are having a beautiful and blessed holiday season. It's beginning to look and feel a lot like Christmas down here in South Carolina. The weather is chilly and things look so festive everywhere we go. It is hard not to get in to the spirit of things.

Ever since the tree in the living room went up this year, it has looked really nice except it was really bare at the top.

We are very old fashioned around our house when it comes to what goes on our tree. In other words, we are not into cookie cutter or one color scheme or one-themed decorations. We load every single branch and sprig with ornaments, some of which are close to a half century old. Yes, we have been married going on fifty years now and we have some ornaments from the first Christmas we shared as newly-weds! It's a collection of memories of places, events and experiences with family and friends. Those are things that are important to us.

The quest to find something lightweight and traditional is something I struggle with every year. We really wanted a star and we have actually purchased several over the years. The problem with the ones we have purchased in the past is that they are a bit heavy and tend to topple unless we(I) rig up something like a wooden skewer and pipe cleaners to use as a back brace. You can imagine how that turns out!

In the quest for a solution, I began to look for a better solution. I wanted something that would simply rest on the branches at the top of the tree. It wasn't long before I found a little tutorial with pictures and templates for making several different sizes of a 3-D, five pointed paper star. If you are interested in creating one of these stars, you can click here to find both the easy to understand instructions, pictures and links to the templates for putting one of these together. If you are new at making 3-D paper stars, as I was, I recommend this easy to read and follow tutorial I discovered on Instructables and written by Fungus Amungus.

Our Christmas Tree With New 3-D Paper Star Topper

I chose the mid-sized template for my star, since our tree is not huge but is fairly substantial. couldn't find my card stock supply right away so I simply used Crafters Pick non-toxic super glue I found at Hobby Lobby a couple of years ago to glue another blank sheet to the back of each of the copies of the printed template. When the pages were dry, I cut out the templates and found they made a pretty sturdy base for assembling each point of the five stars.

A Handmade 3-D Paper Star Tree Topper

I used the same Crafters Pick Non-toxic super glue to glue each point together and then to glue the points to each other. I allowed all that to dry overnight and the next morning I spray painted a base white of Krylon Semi-Gloss White. After the white paint dried, I then sprayed several coats of Krylon Shiny Silver Metallic paint to finish the look. I then found some little antique rhinestone buttons in my very large button collection. I made a small hole in the middle of the front and back of the star at the intersection of the points. I used the same glue to place one of the little buttons on the front and back of the star.

I was very pleased with the way the star looked after I was finished making it, especially since it was my first time making a 3-D paper star. The two paints I used give it the appearance of being made of tin and I love that. The best part it is not as heavy as tin would be and it sits nicely on the branches at the top of our tree.

As some of you may know, one of my feet has been giving me a lot of discomfort since the beginning of this year. Traditional x-rays did not reveal any fractures and so my case was treated as a bad sprain. The chronic pain increased over the months until late in October I suffered a fall in my back yard. Unfortunately, attempting to walk on the foot resulted in a loud popping sound and searing pain.

After a visit to a prompt care facility in town and undergoing more x-rays, it was now obvious that the navicular bone located at the top of my foot had snapped. I was in denial, even after they directed me to an orthopedic specialist/surgeon.. Three days later, the specialist advised me that the area the fracture was located in was virtually impossible to occur in the manner in which the fall had occurred and was a stress fracture. This explained the many months of previous months and months of discomfort and pain in that foot. The only treatment was to be surgery and months of down time and recovery.

This news was especially difficult for me to accept, seeing as it was coming at the most busy holiday season of the year. It has been a real downer for even me--the eternal optimist! After more than seven weeks in the fiberglass cast, the new air boot/splint allow me to put the injured foot down and take some steps on my own with both feet. Praise the Lord!

My daughter and her family are currently residing with us while they are in the process of building a new home. The dear girl was determined we were going to put up a tree and decorations and she took that task upon herself. My son-in-law helped my husband to get the things down from the attic and out of closets and she decorated the tree, etc. and it has been a real blessing to see it all lit up and festive. This has done a great deal to lift my spirits too! I love and appreciate you, my sweet Stephanie!

Meanwhile, I am still enjoying playing around with all the new graphics and illustrations I have been downloading and told you about in my previous post . I used one of the beautiful watercolor floral illustrations and one of the new fonts to design a new blog header. It's been a lot of fun playing around with some of the animal character creator sets, for example is this whimsical llama character:
I'm hoping to stay healthy and well and be getting back into the swing of things. I hope to be getting in more posts in the future.

Meanwhile, I extend the warmest of greetings to all who visit my blog and other social media.

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2. By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also; knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4. And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5. And hope maketh not ashamed: because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. Romans 5:1-5

Sixteen days after surgery I was back at the surgeon's office today. Temporary splint on my foot in the picture below was taken off and surgical sutures were removed. I was told that the wound had healed and looked good.

This new Sky Blue fiberglass cast was put on. It's much more cheerful looking and seems somewhat lighter than the other and those are good things. There will be no walking with this cast either. It will be coming off in four weeks and yet another will go on for another four weeks and still no walking. The thought of the long weeks ahead can be disheartening. I am so very impatient.

I am not patient with myself and so I asked God early in this process to grant me patience to get through this time. Still, I have been impatient and downright irritable at times.

Having this unexpected event has given me time to ponder and to appreciate the blessings of mobility and independence I have so often carelessly taken for granted. There are those of all ages and for many different reasons who have not and may never have these abilities. My temporary condition will not last. This is a very humbling thing for me to consider. Thanks to God for giving me this unexpected time.

He answers our prayers in His own way and on His timeline--not our own. He is the Great Teacher and I am still a work in progress. He is teaching me how to be patient, even though I am exasperatingly slow sometimes to catch on. I'm not there yet, but I am still learning. Yes, there is truly glory in this tribulation and it is working patience and that patience is giving me experience and experience is giving me hope.

Thank you God for bringing forth patience out of my tribulation, that I might gain experience and, with that experience, know that only from you comes hope and faith. Amen.

Fall is my favorite time of year. It always has been. It reminds me of a gorgeous and outrageously flamboyant and free-spirited lady who walks into an affair where the mood in the room has become sort of stuffy and stale. Everyone has become bored and is wishing for a break in the monotonous tone of things. Sort of like the devil-may-care Miss Phryne Fisher. Everyone stops and takes note when she makes an appearance. You just never know what she has up her sleeve or in her garter, but you can bet it will be something outrageous. Everything she wears is anything but boring. She truly knows how to shake things up and she does precisely that. That's how Fall is. It really does spice things up!

Another reason I love Fall is that though my husband and I met in late Summer (on a blind date arranged by my roommate), our true courtship began in early Fall. We fell in love during the Fall of that year. Yes, we fell hopelessly and head-over-hills in love while Fall was putting on her show. I think it may have started when he took me to the county fair on a wonderfully crisp and cool evening. He showed off by playing every game and he must have spent his whole week's pay. He won so many prizes for me that we could hardly carry them out of there. They were really wonderful things that we don't see at most fairs and carnivals these days. I'll never forget the big black and white Panda that I am sorry to say I do not have today. It was such a perfectly sweet and wonderful date!

The first day of Fall, which was the day before yesterday, I fell again!

This time I really fell hard, really hard! Literally. That day that won't be soon forgotten. There was a mishap in my backyard in which I fell and it left me with a broken foot. What a way to start the season!

Still, I enjoyed the first day of the season right up until I fell. Early in the day, I had been out back taking pictures of these Sunflowers, which I had about given up on once or twice after I planted them. These were welcome late bloomers, for sure, and have brightened up our yard.
We had experienced some lower than average temps for a week or so and it appeared they had stopped growing. Then the weather heated up again and they started growing quickly. Then the very windy conditions our area experienced from Hurricane Irma came through and blew many of them over and broke some of them off. Again, I feared they would not survive. I was wrong. Survive they did and made developed some wonderful flowers. I had never had much success with Sunflowers in the past and so I am truly thrilled with the ones that made it through to maturity. There are some that are a Giant variety and some that are not quite as tall or large flowering, but they are all beautiful to my husband and me! The blooms are all very large but this is one of the smaller variety. You can see the difference in the shape of the petals. Isn't this one lovely though?
The color yellow is one of my favorite colors and sunflowers are some of my favorite flowers. On our last visit to Biltmore's Antler Hill Village, we were inspired by the wave upon wave of giant sunflowers planted in the fields. They were wonderfully romantic. I wrote about those flowers in this blog post Here is a photo of my sweetheart and me taken at one of those fields:
I took some photos of our Sunflowers later in the evening too(before my fateful fall). Those in the photo below are some that were blown over and are leaning forward. In my previous post I mentioned the model/miniature train display at Biltmore House and Gardens in Asheville, North Carolina. This exhibit will continue through September 4, 2017. It is located at The Antler Hill Village area on Biltmore properties. We were so glad to have the opportunity to see it when we visited in mid July. It seems there is always something fun and exciting to do at Biltmore.

It is always a treat for us when we can tour little model villages, especially when they have model trains scooting along railways running through them.Vanderbilt Travels Railway was definitely one of the highlights there during our stay. It is a delightful outdoor model train display in which the structures, buildings and scenery which appear along the railway are composed of natural elements, such as leaves, twigs and other materials acquired from nature. It's amazing what has been achieved through the use of mostly natural materials.

You can read a bit more of the history relating to each of the architectural elements on display at this site on Biltmore's official blog and I referred to the post for the bits of Vanderbilt family history which the exhibit is centered around. A biography, The First Tycoon-the Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt written by T.J. Stiles is full of information about CorneliusVanderbilt's fortune building and other facts. I am also in the process of reading this book. I saw the book for purchase at "Bookbinders", a book store located among the shops at Biltmore House. Fortunately, I had already scored a real deal several months back on a very nice paperback copy of it at our local S.P.C.A. thrift shop. It is a large book and a good source of Vanderbilt reference,
Much of the Vanderbilt fortune was built around the building of and use of enterprises related to waterways(both national and internationally), beginning with George Vanderbilt's grandfather Cornelius Vanderbilt. The photograph at the top of the referenced blog post is a model of New York's Grand Central Terminal. A bronze statue of Cornelius Vanderbilt is located at the Grand Central Terminal and can be seen by as many as 82 million commuters each year at the terminal.

This wonderful model train display at the Biltmore was created by Applied Imagination Ltd. The folks there did a really fabulous job. The detail in each tiny element depicting some of the places and things that are a part of Vanderbilt family travels and Biltmore history have been artfully and imaginatively recreated. Readers of this post might wish to visit Applied Imagination's Facebook page and see the little Vanderbilt Travels Railway and some other projects which the artists there have been working on by visiting this link.
Upon entering the tiny village, we followed the scenic pathway to the right and one of the first models we saw was an intricate reproduction of Biltmore Passenger Station. Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, replaced an original train depot which was the first train depot in Asheville area.
According to the Biltmore House & Gardens blog, "The Vanderbilt family line originated in Holland in the village of De Bilt, not far from Amsterdam." It is fitting, therefore, that a tiny windmill, as well as classic Canal Houses. Again, the attention to detail in these precious little structures is amazing
My husband and I took a road trip for a couple of relaxing nights in Asheville, North Carolina. Since we had planned another visit to Biltmore House and Gardens and the Biltmore Winery and shops at Biltmore Antler Hill Village, we decided to book a room at the Village Hotel at Biltmore's Antler Hill Village. Staying on Biltmore's grounds is something we had wanted to do for the past couple of years.

The thing that stood out as we approached the hotel was the field of gigantic sunflowers which were standing, row upon row, alongside the road in front of the resort entrance. Absolutely beautiful!
We found our room at the hotel was very comfy and lovely with a quite neutral combination of colors, including black, dark gray, light gray, white and off-white, with a splash of red thrown into the mix. The style was somewhat modern and sleek with a bit of farmhouse appeal in the accent pillows and bathroom fixtures. A barn style sliding wooden door provides privacy between the beautifully tiled walk-in shower/toilet area and the vanity/dressing area.
I took only a few pictures in our room. There was a nice spacious sitting area with a large window seat with cushioned seating and throw pillows, as well as a built in desk. Below are a couple of photos. The first is of the bed and sleep area. The other is the coffee/beverage/bar area.
Our room was located on the second floor which is where the Village Social Restaurant and Bar is located. Link here to take a look at this great restaurant. It was very convenient for us to just take a short stroll up the hallway to experience a really good meal, which we did a couple of times. We visited once for a late lunch on the afternoon we arrived at the hotel and the other for a delicious breakfast. I really enjoyed the Artisan Lettuce Salad I ordered for lunch and the Crab and Pesto Egg Scramble I had for breakfast the morning we departed.

The Village Hotel stands right next to Antler Hill Village Shops and Winery. Upon arriving, we took a leisurely stroll over to the the shops. We enjoyed a double dip of ice cream (I had Raspberry Sherbet) at The Village Ice Cream Shop. Some great pastries can be purchased in the ice cream shop too.

There was a wonderful outdoor display set up at the village. My husband and I adore miniature train sets and consider watching them and seeing how the props are set up a real treat. The weather was so pleasant that we stayed quite a while out there taking pictures and talking to the nice gentleman who was overseeing things there. I plan to do another post about that fascinating display

We also visited a barn built on the site that is still standing and has been maintained in fine condition. It is housing some wonderful antique farm equipment used during the days the farm operations and dairy operations were running at full speed. So much there for those who enjoy studying the agricultural machinery and techniques used before we had modern day conveniences.

Our second day was the first full day of our visit. We grabbed a quick breakfast sandwich at the little sandwich shop on the ground floor of our hotel. We toured the house this day, which is always a treat and we ate a late afternoon lunch at one of our favorite restaurants at Biltmore House & Gardens. We dined at the Stable to Cafe' which is located within what was once the original stables that serviced the Biltmore House. Our favorite meal in the cafe' is the Stable Cafe' Sampler for two. The vegetable sides on the platter vary seasonally, but the main sampler of meats always includes smoked baby back ribs, smoked pulled barbecue pork and rotisserie chicken. The current menu can be seen on the site I referenced in this article. It is a fabulous meal!

After taking the shuttle back over to our hotel that afternoon, we went back to the wine shops and purchased some gifts before heading home the following morning.

We truly enjoyed our relaxing little stay on the Biltmore properties.

I have mentioned on my blog before on more than a few occasions that we adore planning trips that involve our family and extended family. This past month, we were able to get together and take one of those cherished trips to Walt Disney World. There were fourteen of us this time and we were all able to stay at Disney's Kidani Village at Animal Kingdom Lodge. Kidani Village is one of Disney Vacation Club's member resorts and is one of our favorite resorts in which to stay.

Many of you have heard of Disney's Animal Kingdom. Animal Kingdom Resort and Kidani Village is just a very short distance away from the park. The resort is the same theme as the Animal Kingdom Park and has a very authentic African vibe. Most of the cast members (otherwise known as staff) are of very authentic African origins. Most speak at least some English and they are all very friendly and helpful and lend so much authenticity to any stay there. This makes way for an "out of Africa" ambiance to the visitor.

One of the things we enjoy most about a stay at Kidani Village is being able to walk out on a balcony(if your accommodations happen to be on the Savannah side) or a fabulous porch, complete with great big rocking chairs. From there we can get a bird's eye view of all the beautiful native to Africa animals and wildlife roaming about on the Savannah area of the resort.

There is also an area on the ground floor of the resort with a viewing area surrounded by rustic fences posts. There are various events that take place around a fire pit, with surrounding chairs, in this area and there is always a cast member or two there to greet visitors and answer any questions they might have about the resort, the animals or their African homeland.

This area is my favorite spot from which to view the animals. It is from this spot that I recorded the following video, which lasts about five minutes. You will notice there are giraffes, cattle, storks and so on in the background. The video is really quite relaxing to watch.

You can click to go over and watch full screen on YouTube. A visit to Disney's Kidani Village is a beautiful and truly unique experience.

Thank you so very much for stopping by my blog to check out the post. I hope you enjoyed the video and that you will come back soon for a visit.

This is my final post about our family's recent day excursion to Hunting Island State Park and other interesting and inviting places around the Beaufort, South Carolina low country area. This will be a short post.

We had a full day of exploring. We were constantly on the move, from early morning as we began our journey from our home in Aiken, S.C., until our safe arrival back at home late that evening. We are very grateful to Jason, our son-in-law, for being our driver for the entire day. Daughter Angela followed in her van with her children and friend of the family.

After we visited the ruins of Prince William's Parish Church, we made a stop at a table set up in front of the home of a very talented artisan basket maker. The low country is noted for the beautiful coiled sweet grass baskets produced there. These baskets are truly pieces of art and the grass used to create them has a sweet aroma.

The art of Coiled Sweet grass basket making is considered historically significant because it is an example of African cultural heritage. This utilitarian and beautiful art form came over the Atlantic Ocean with certain enslaved Africans who would work on the rice plantations. The art form has been passed down from generation to generation. Being made by hand and having no set pattern each piece is unique and is one of a kind.

I would have loved to have one of the large baskets, but that would have been a big splurge. I am happy, for now, to have settled for this small beauty in which I can store a few trinkets.
Our table was located right next to the windows along the rear of the restaurant. From there, we had a wonderful view of the boats docked in back of the restaurant.
If you should ever travel to the low country area, in and near Beaufort, South Carolina, I suggest setting aside a day or so to visit places in this and several previous posts. The locations in and near Beaufort, South Carolina are some you will not want to miss. We certainly enjoyed spending our day together with family and friends.
There are so many amazing and wonderful things in life to experience and see if we but take a few moments to stop and look around.. Beauty can be found in some out of the way places. This post is about one such beautiful place. At least, it is beautiful to me, because I happen to really enjoy rambling through old churches and graveyards.

The ruins of the Prince William's Parish Church and graves is such a place. The church was built between 1745 and 1753 and was named Prince William's Parish Church but was also called Sheldon Church. As the sign indicates, the church is also called Sheldon Church. Building of the church was primarily paid for by Lt. Gov. William Bull and was sometimes referred to as Sheldon Church after Bull's plantation, which was also called Sheldon.

The church was constructed in the Greek Revival style. It was burned by the British in 1779 during the Revolutionary War. It was rebuilt in 1826. The church was alleged to have been burned again in 1865 as General Sherman marched from Georgia into South Carolina during The War Between the States.

However, according to some writings about the church, it may not have been burned but, instead, gutted on the inside in order to obtain materials to reuse to rebuild some of the homes that had been burned by Sherman's army during that time.

The sign indicating the church's location might easily be missed as one travels along the narrow coastal highway near Yemassee, South Carolina. Fortunately, our son-in-law Jason had remembered seeing the sign and glimpsing the ruins from a trip down that way last summer. I am so glad that he made note of its location, because it would have been a shame to have missed seeing this lovely place.

Sign for Prince William's Parish Church AKA Sheldon Church, near Yemassee, South Carolina

You might imagine that the location of the ruins has often been the scene of weddings and as backdrops for photo shoots and so on. According to notices on the grounds of the ruins, special permission must now be obtained for the location to be used for those types of functions.

The ruins and graves are located among many of the beautiful moss covered oak trees for which our southern coastal regions are known.
One of the reasons I enjoy walking through old graveyards like this one is the stories that sometimes go along with the grave markings. This lone little marker at the grave of a child less than five years old made me feel sad. Sitting there, all alone inside a large plat,it left me wondering what happened to the parents and other family members. Why were they not buried here with this little fellow? What happened that S.P. and Eva would have left little Collis.
Perhaps, they passed away and are buried in this plat but without any markers. Maybe there was no one left to provide them with headstones at their burial sites. Who knows?

There are a good many other crumbling graves scattered about the church cemetary, including the grave of a soldier who died in The War Between the States. There was one much more recent, modern and pristine burial site with Azalea bushes planted all around it. I took pictures of some of the others graves but will focus the rest of this post, however, on the church ruins and grounds.

Hello and welcome to Mimi Mine, my blog!

As far back as I can remember, I have loved lighthouses. Everything about them is incredibly intriguing. The manner in which each is constructed, from the height, colors and shapes of paint patterns, is so diverse around the world. The location and history of each one is of interest to me. One of the boards on my Pinterest accounts is all about lighthouses from different locations around the world, including a few of my own pictures taken from personal visits and tours.

If you care to visit my Lighthouses board on Pinterest, I am providing the link here.

On a recent day trip to Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina, we had the privilege of visiting the Hunting Island Light. Though we had visited the beach on the island some years ago, we didn't make it to the lighthouse.

Like many of these wonderful old structures, this one is no longer used as a functioning lighthouse, but remains open to the public. For a minimal fee visitors can go inside and climb all the way to the top of this wonderful old lighthouse structure. Hunting Island Light is the only lighthouse in the state of South Carolina that remains open to the public.

Construction of the original lighthouse began in 1859 but the tower was destroyed during the Civil War in 1862. Development for reconstruction began in the 1860s and designed as a "segmented cast iron" structure. It was constructed in this way so that it could later be disassembled and moved if required.

Erection of the replacement structure began in 1873 with completion in 1975. The cast-iron segments are bolted together and form a shell. The cast-iron shell is lined with bricks, which are the main load bearing element in the tower.

The cast-iron spiral staircase with 167 steps is quite decorative with railings and beams for support. The observation deck is an elaborate structure, as well, and provides impressive views of the ocean and beach.

Lighthouse at Hunting Island, S.C.

Originally, Hunting Island Lighthouse was erected on a site on the northern portion of Hunting Island, South Carolina. Because of erosion of the beach at that location, there was a threat of damage to the lighthouse and its appurtenant structures. The lighthouse and structures were relocated about a mile from the original site in 1889. It remains there today.

Operation of the lighthouse continued until 1933 when it was deactivated. Here, at the website of Friends of Hunting Island, you can read a little more about Hunting Island, Hunting Island Lighthouse, the beaches and other activities. There is a good video where you can hear the park manager as he speaks about the island and activities.

Of course, because of modern technological advances, most lighthouses are no longer used for the original purpose of acting as a beacon to help sailors navigate the waters safely as they approach the area.Though the original lamp is no longer functioning at the top of the lighthouse at Hunting Island, a rotating light has been installed in its place. The light is turned on at dusk and as it rotates through the night, it gives visitors to the park a feeling that it is still a functioning lighthouse.

For those who enjoy camping, there are camping spaces, as well!

Needless to say, even though it was going to take some determination on my part, I intended to climb every last one of the 167 steps leading up the spiral staircase in this 132 foot beauty. My upper back has been giving me some trouble and I did have a moment or two of self-doubt. Even so, I felt that if the muscles in my legs could hold out, I could make it all the way up.

Hunting Island Lighthouse, Hunting Island State Park in South Carolina-USA

It was pretty hot inside the lighthouse and I stopped a couple of times a long the way up to take a breather. I remember thinking, at one point, about the fact that the staircase was becoming increasingly narrower the farther up that I went. In a moment of trepidation, I even envisioned rescuers trying to maneuver a stretcher, with my body on it, around the curves of that spiral staircase. Not a happy thought, I must say!

My daughter, son-in-law and grandson had already left me and had long since made it to the top with out me. They were none the worse for wear. I mean, honestly, if they could still do this:

Yes, I took a moment or two, at the landing of every other flight or so of the cast-iron spiral staircase. Yes, it took me a couple of minutes (or so) longer than my much younger counterparts. Still, It was a memorable experience, for sure, but I am happy to say that I made it all the way to the top of Hunting Island Lighthouse--all 167 steps!

When our youngest daughter and her family invited us to ride down toward Beaufort, South Carolina for a day trip to beautiful Hunting Island State Park, we didn't have to think before saying yes. My husband and I have been thinking for months how much we would enjoy a trip to the beach for some relaxation and fun in the sun and so this trip would be perfect. One of the things in life we love most is spending time with our family. We have been very busy lately, so this day trip would be just the thing.

By the time all was said and done, our other daughter and her family were in on the plans, as well. That made the trip sound even better. One of our grandsons invited a friend along, as well. Eleven of us, in all, made the trip to Hunting Island.

We all left for our trip early that morning and it could not have been more beautiful when we arrived at the park. The skies were a gorgeous blue and the weather was absolutely perfect for beach combing and playing in the sun and ocean! It had been years since I visited Hunting Island last and it was even more beautiful than I had remembered.

We have some gorgeous beaches all along the coastline here in South Carolina. Many of them are within just a few hours of our home.

The following are a few photos I took at the beach on the beautiful day we spent at Hunting Island State Park.
My favorite things to do at the beach are walking for miles and hunting for sharks' teeth and shells. The tide was perfect for these things the entire time we were there.
If you happen to be old enough, you might remember the movie "Ten" from 1979. Well, I am old enough to remember that and a whole lot more. The movie starred actress Bo Derek, who was the 10 on a scale of 1 to 10. Though our little Jewelynn didn't sport dreadlocks in the following picture, she was running on the beach sporting salt water beach locks. "Ten" came to my mind when I started looking at these pictures of Jewel. She is a ten in my book, for sure!
There is a lot to do at Hunting Island State Park, including camping. There is also a beautiful lighthouse there. It is the only lighthouse in South Carolina that still allows patrons to enter (for a very small fee) and climb all the way to the top. There are some great places to eat in nearby Beaufort, S.C. and the awesomely beautiful ruins of a very old church and gravesites. These will be posts for another day!

Thank you, Jason and Stephanie, for taking us to the beach. We totally enjoyed our day trip to Hunting Island. Now, I am wanting to go back for a longer stay. If you would like to check out Hunting Island State Park you can go here.
