Magazine Obsessions

My mother enjoyed reading and read to me quite often. My father could not get enough of the printed word in newspapers, books and magazines. We might not have been wealthy, but by the time I (the last of the children) came along my father always made certain that we had a large collection of books and many magazines around our house. The two of us, my father and I, would sit together and peruse those beautiful, glossy, large pages of "Look" and "Life" magazines. Daddy would point out things to me and we would sometimes have  conversations about what was on the pages. Sundays, after church, were some of my favorite times because I would snuggle up next to my father on the couch as we read the Savannah Morning News. He would always read the comic strips to me (they were called "funny papers" back then)! There was always a big colorful section of funny papers. He and I would laugh together as he ran his fingers along  the words on each comic strip, re...

A Grand Gingerbread House

Image
My husband and I were at Disney World last year around the time that all the Disney resorts had just been decked out with all the decor and finery of the season. One of our favorite things to do during the holidays is going from resort to resort to see how each has been uniquely decked out. We call it Holiday Resort Hopping. This post will focus on Disney's Grand Floridian Resort. A visit to the Grand Floridian at any time, but, most particularly during the holidays, reveals to the visitor why it is called the Grand Floridian. Everything done there is done on the grandest of scales. A visit there is like taking a stroll back in time to the Victorian era. The spell of the resort is cast immediately upon stepping off the monorail system and walking up to the front portico. The resort hearkens back to the Victorian era and this period antique car is one of the first things to behold. Isn't it wonderful? It reminds me of the motorcars in Downton Abbey, one of my all-time favorit...

A Train Trip Through A Miniature Bavarian Countryside at EPCOT's World Showcase

Image
This is a post which I have intended to write for months. My time has been very limited as of late and so this was put on the back burner. Let me begin by saying that I love things created in miniature or on a scale much smaller than real life. You know, like tiny houses and buildings, landscape scenes that look as if you are viewing the real scene from a great distance. These often include people going about their daily routines, animals and even railways with functioning tracks. When I posted about Disney's Yacht Club at Christmas, I included pictures of the miniature railway and ski village on display in the lobby. If you missed that post, "Snow at the Yacht Club," or would like to revisit it you can go to this link:   http://mimimine.blogspot.com/2013/12/snow-at-yacht-club.html . This picture is from that post. Isn't it a fabulous display of miniatures? Miniature Railway at Disney's Yacht Club at Christmas Today's post is about another min...

Snow at the Yacht Club

Image
It is my hope that the holidays have been wonderful for all of you and that you are still experiencing the joy that is a part of good times, food and fun spent with family and friends. Disney's Yacht Club at Walt Disney World is celebrating with a blanket of snow. Well, actually the snow is actually "faux" and is covering the wonderful miniature village displayed in the lobby of this beautiful resort. It has been my experience that when Disney does anything, Disney does it in a big way, even miniature village scenes. The village, with all its delightful little homes, churches, shops, people doing chores and shopping, children building snowmen, hidden Mickeys and a toy train making its rounds throughout, is a magical winter wonderland. Each snow covered scene transports the visitor into the fantasy taking place within. The display is located to the right of the front entrance and covers a large portion of that section of the lobby. It is made up of many different sc...
